"Buffy? A sister?" They cried. "How can this be possible?" When a few episodes had passed and everyone was just acting like she belonged there, we started getting really confused. Maybe we just weren't paying attention for the first four years and Dawn's been there the whole time. But in episode five of season five, all was revealed. We weren't insane. She was a mystical blob of energy that could open the doors to all demon dimensions and a hellgod was out to get her. Some monks had changed everyone's memories so that they all thought Dawn had been there all along ... yes, I think someone is insane here, but it's not me! Fast forward to the end of the season, everyone knows that Dawn is the Key - unfortunately, thanks to a brainsucked Tara, so does Glory. Buffy (with a little help from the Buffybot) manages to hold her off and stop her from doing the ritual, but Doc, one of her minions, starts it instead. With Dawn's blood opening the portal, she knows that she has to jump into it to close it. Buffy realises that since Dawn was made from her, they share a bloodlink, and jumps instead, closing the portal and leaving Dawn devastated. With no more Glory and the portal closed, Dawn's no longer the Key, she's just a regular teenager. After Buffy's brought back to life, they start living a normal life for a while - well, normal for the Summers family. In Older and Far Away it's revealed that Dawn's a kleptomaniac, something we've known for a while. Stealing things from her friends and the Magic Box to get attention. After returning the things she stole, Dawn gets more attention from Buffy. At the end of season six she shows an amazing ability to do random summersaults during fights, which she puts down to watching Buffy fight for all these years. Season seven showed a big change in both the character, and the trust and responsibility placed on her by the others. She helped with the research, jokingly becoming "Watcher Junior". While Buffy wanted her out of town for the big showdown, she showed resolve and determination to help out, and proved that she really can hold her own.
